Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and his nationalism

"No real change in history can be achieved by discussions" these lines were told by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and I think these are the ideal words to summarise the political and philosophical ideology of Netaji and his take on nationalism.

Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose was the sixth son and the ninth child of his parent making him an introverted shy kid. The transformation from an introverted shy kid to the president of all India youth Congress and also the secretary of Bengal State Congress took a lot of time, strength, and sacrifices which are inconceivable today.

Netaji was a stun follower of Swami Vivekananda and Ramakrishna and his principles were based on the philosophy of serving the poor and needy. The discriminatory nature of the Britishers was the reason he attained hatred for the Britishers at an early age just like the political ideology of Mahatma Gandhi transformed when he faced racism in South Africa. While the seed of nationalism in both Gandhiji and Subhash Chandra Bose was borne by the same discriminatory racist mindset, the trees of nationalism grew completely different taking different paths for freedom.

The difference in the political ideology and implementation of nationalism was the thing that polarized the ideology of Gandhiji and Subhash Chandra Bose in extracting Britishers and uprooting them from our country yet the topic has been the source of the debate even after 70 years of independence.

The conflict between these two political figures has given rise to the two definitions of nationalism that we know now. According to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, nationalism can be defined as devotion especially excessive or undiscriminating devotion to the interest or culture of the particular nation-state, whereas Gandhiji believes that nationalism should be equated to patriotism and patriotism is equal to humanity.

Netaji believed that every individual of this country has to fight for country and country alone, whereas Gandhiji believed that freedom can be only gained by a chain reaction via a pyramid structure of work where an individual can be sacrificed for the family, the family can be sacrificed for the village, the village can be sacrificed for a district, the district can be sacrificed for the province, the province can be sacrificed for the country and the country can be sacrificed for humanity.

Even though the difference between the political dogma of these two leaders has always been a topic of discussion, it cannot be denied that Gandhiji and Subhash Chandra Bose along with the lakhs of Indians who sacrificed for a country where the prime reason for us to get freedom.

A freedom fighter, a yogi, a writer, a civil service exam topper, and an unsung hero of the Indian struggle towards freedom, Subhash Chandra Bose believed in nationalism and freedom for India at any cost.

Netaji’s first appearance in politics was made possible by Gandhiji after the Government of India act 1935 with the partial pre-independence act which Congress won.

But the debate of nationalism picked fire when in 1935 second world war was initiated and then Subhash Chandra Bose believed that when the Britishers are at their most flaccid condition we can unanimously uproot them from our country but Gandhiji denied any act of violence even though Bose again reminded him that he did the same thing in 1914 during World war 1 but Britishers have never acknowledged the sacrifices put by our Indian soldiers.

Even though Subhash Chandra Bose and Gandhiji had political differences but the term “Father of the Nation” for Gandhi JI was given by Subhas Chandra Bose in July 1944 on Azad Hind radio.

After the death of Subhash Chandra Bose in 1946 when the famous trial of Shah Nawaz Khan, Gurbaksh Singh Dhillon, and Prem Kumar Sahgal happened where they were court-martial, Indians in the navy revolted and that was the pivotal point where Britishers actually lost the country and the country really gained freedom.

According to me nationalism should neither be hyper or low but should follow a central pathway, and the joint effort by Gandhi Ji and Netaji was the reason why we got freedom from the Britishers. I believe that the nationalism which Netaji believed in and the Nationalism Gandhi Ji believed in are both different faces of the same coin and we all can learn a lot from both of them.
